Free Himalayan Language Book Distribution
Many Himalayan languages are highly endangered. This is compounded by low rates of literacy among remote mountain communities. Here at Alatala we have written a simple counting book about a family of yaks on a picnic. English by Amalia Rubin (New York), Tibetan by Drolma (Golok), Illustrations by Machig Dolma (California).
Our goal is to distribute this book for free to himalayan families in remote mountain regions. Currently we are working to distribute 700 copies of the Dolpo Dialect edition (translation by Lhakpa Tsering) to Dolpo families. If you would like to contribute, each book costs just over $1 USD to print, so every dollar makes a difference! The remaining costs are transportation and distribution, all of which is also being done through local Himalayan companies.
Any amount over our stated goal will go towards future printing and distribution as well as new editions in other endangered Himalayan languages such as Tamang, Varagung, Sherpa, and minority dialects of Tibetan.
If you are from a Himalayan community abroad and wish to purchase books for your community, please contact us.
